Sensory Diet

We just learned the results from the Sensory Profile. Livi is found to have a low sensory registration (she is not bothered by things that bother others- high pain tolerance) sensation seeking and sensory sensitive behaviors. In the tactile department she was found to be mildly defensive, meaning she is bothered by messy hands and the waist band of her clothing. The OT told me that Livi craves sensory input and hops, jumps and bounces to feel her body in relation to her space. Heavy work and Proprioception are the main things we will work on…. we have already been doing some of these things at home.. the hard part is just finding the energy to keep up with my input craving toddler. The good news is that the effects of these solid input exercises last 2 hours…. so I get a breather before I am to begin again with the hopping & rocking and bouncing.

Our Sensory Diet includes specific activities in the following areas

Deep touch pressure- firm hugs & Livi sandwich w/Pillows, rolling a ball on her body- we can never give too much of this per our OT. This is calming to our daughters body and help organization overall.

Proprioception- bouncing, jumping, brushing, joint compressions, tug of war, upper-extremity weight bearing( wheel barrel walking)

Heavy work- pushing, pulling, climbing, wearing a weighted backpack, pushing against a wall.

Tactile-sensory play materials- high fives, beans, sand, playdoh, shaving cream- put items in Ziploc bag so she can feel them if she is hesitant to get her hands messy. I was told to wash new jeans several times or better yet buy them used from a resale shop as they are softer and more worn in. I thought that was a great tip as was the ziploc bag tip… they eventually you work your way to the child touching the item in the bag.

Oral Motor- Livi gets further evaluation on 4/16- but using straws, chewy & crunchy candy, blowing bubbles all help with these skills. Drinking milkshakes or yogurt through a straw increases jaw strength.

I was given a list of calming activities such as using relaxing scents- lavender & vanilla lotions, rocking in a blanket, a quiet time tent to regulate her when she is over stimulated.

We were already doing a good portion of these exercises just not at the intensity and frequency Livi needs. I’m hoping to see some positive changes.
